Do You Think I Learned My Lesson?

When I took delivery of my New Beetle, back in November 2003, Greg Duncan the salesman, admonished my as he handed over the keys, "Don't lose these, they cost $250 to be replaced". You see, these keys have little computer chips in them. They are coded to the car. If you lose a set, you can't just take the second set down to your local locksmith and get another one cut. No, you need to take it to the dealer and have a new key coded to your vehicle. So, I am notorious for losing keys. Mostly because I'm careless. With Greg's warning in the back of my mind constantly, I have tried to be more careful with these keys. However, when my hands are full of items that I have removed from my car, I have a tendency to just drop everything into one place, groceries, purse and whatever else I have in my hands. So, I was slightly panicked when I was unable to find one of the keys to my car. It wasn't just the key, it had some other things on it. A couple of store cards and a little plastic horse. I looked in all the usual places, desktop, end table, kitchen table, etc. No key. I started to get a little worried. I checked the couch, to see if it was mixed up among the pillows. I checked under the couch. No key. Finally, last night, I looked among some boxes of Christmas decorations that were given to me a few days ago. I had had my hands full bringing them in, and had just dumped them on the floor to put away later. Sure enough, there were the missing keys. Whew! No having to fork out $250. No having to worry if I left them somewhere, where someone had picked them up. They are now safely hanging on their hook. I am hoping I have learned my lesson and will be more diligent about hanging them up as soon as I come in the door.
