...I have missed a pregnant Maltese. I've been able to spot all the other breeds when they are expecting, but it's difficult for me to tell when the Maltese are expecting. Especially, these last two. They were both first time mothers, they were very small and they each had only one puppy. Both puppies were tiny too. But, at least they were healthy. The procedure there is to remove the pregnant dog from the run and put her in her own enclosure in the nursery, where she can have her pups. But, last Friday and today, I arrived at work to find that they had had their pups in the runs. There are other dogs around, barking and carrying on and it makes the mothers nervous. Once I removed them and put them in the nursery, they calm down and everything is fine. It's the equivalent of a woman having her baby in either a nice, heated birthing suite at the hospital. Or, having her baby in the front seat of a pick-up truck along the freeway.
