I was about to put two letters into the outgoing mail, when I realized that I only had 37 cent stamps on them. I had forgotten that the price of postage went up to 39 cents on January 8th. I didn't have any 2 cent stamps available. I counted how many 37 cents stamps I still had, including the two on the envelope. I still had 65 stamps left. I don't really use snail mail all that much anymore, so stamps last me quite awhile. I went to the post office to buy the 65, 2 cent stamps. I needed to get the two letters out today. I walked up to the window and noticed the guy had sheets and sheets of 2 cent stamps just sitting there on the counter. I got my 65, and moved to the side so I could put my change in my wallet. The guy behind me asked for 60 of the 2 cent stamps. A lady, who was waiting in line, made a comment to her friend about us buying 2 cent stamps. "You didn't know that the price went up to mail a letter?" Her friend asked. She had no clue. Luckily she found out before she had any letters sent back for insufficient postage. I don't know if there is going to be any kind of grace period.
Posted by Valkyre at January 12, 2006 09:04 PMYeah, I have to run to the post office right now to get some 2 cent stamps, too. I almost mailed off our phone bill yesterday before I remembered the rate hike!
