New Years Eve 2003

Wow! What a year it has been for me. First, I got a job. And then, because of me having a job, we were able to buy a new car for me to tool around in. Something nice and reliable. Anyway, I hope that everyone has a Happy and Safe New Year.

One of My Christmas Presents

Here's a picture of me wearing what Mike gave me for Christmas:

If you click on my picture, you will get a larger image of what's on my shirt. The Beauty is my new car and the Beast is my 31 year old 1972 Camaro that I have owned for 21 years. I bought it when I was 18 years old and have managed to hold onto it ever since. I've grown so attached to that old beast, that I can never get rid of it. Don't ask me why I look a little psychotic in the picture. It may be because my eyes are reflecting the flash. Anyway, Mike got the t-shirt made at this site:

I love it!

Christmas 2003

Merry Christmas

Here's hoping that everyone has a Merry Christmas. It's raining here! We will be going to my mother's house this afternoon to meet the rest of the family and celebrate. She's having a nice ham dinner brought in. It should be really nice.

Christmas Eve

2 down, 3 to go. Parcels that is. Mike's came in today. Which is good. As it contained my Christmas gift. Helena's didn't come, though. And, she had asked for, and paid extra for 3 day delivery. It's now been 6 days. I told her to call and complain on the 26th and ask for a refund of the extra postage. I am still waiting for 2 packages. I sent off inquiries via one of the websites. I was sent a "robot" e-mail promising me that I would get a response in 48 hours. Today was "48 hours" and still no response. Ironically, these two I am waiting for are ones that I sent off for early. I actually sent off for some items less than 2 weeks ago, and didn't expect to get them until after Christmas. But, I got those in the mail almost immediately. *sigh* I guess I will have to wait until the 26th and call these people via their 1-800 numbers to find out what's going on.

Please Mr. Postman...

As I was going through the Christmas gifts, I had bought via catalog and internet, I noticed that I still hadn't received some of the most important ones yet. Namely, the gifts I had ordered for Mike. I know, I know, the 23rd is probably not the best day to finally take inventory of Christmas gifts, but I have been really busy this year. So, I was mentioning to the family that I am still waiting for about 3 parcels to arrive. And, I was wondering what the odds were that all three would arrive today, Christmas Eve, so I could have them under the tree by tomorrow morning. That's when my eldest piped up, "Have I received any packages lately?" Ummmm.... Nothing had come for her that I could remember. "Oh no! I ordered some gifts online. It didn't take this long last year!" And then Mike chimes in, "Uhhhh... Your gift, Wendy; I ordered it online. I haven't received any packages lately?" Nope, nothing for him either. So, we are sitting here wondering if the mailman will show up with 5 parcels today. I seriously doubt it. It's okay though. This has happened before. And, the kids even seem to like having Christmas stretched out a little bit. They open what they get on Christmas, and then wait for the late presents to come in afterwards. We won't even be having our "Christmas" dinner until Sunday, so I suggested that maybe we could open the late gifts on that day, if they get here before then.

One Afternoon, Two Movies

I took it easy today. Last Sunday, I worked most of the day getting caught up on chores around the house. So, I bought Seabiscuit on DVD at Costco this morning and we watched it around noon. Then, we went to see Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King. Both were excellent movies. The battle scenes were awesome in LOTR's. But, what a contrast. We watched Seabiscuit on our 32" television with our surround sound. It was real nice, quiet, etc. At the theater, the movie was almost ruined by a bunch of rude assholes in the audience. One kid, directly behind me, kept up a running dialog throughout the whole movie. And, several dumbasses, brought cellphones and neglected to put them on discreet, or just silence them. Or, maybe they didn't care. So, several cellphones went off during the movie. This is why I rarely go out to the theater anymore. I will be looking forward to Lord of the Rings, Return of the King coming out on DVD, so I can watch it at my leisure, at home, uninterrupted. I guess the one thing that pissed me off the most, was the kid behind me, who was with his mother. And, she really did nothing to shut him the fuck up. Only when people turned around and glared at her, or shushed her little brat, did she attempt to do anything to stifle him. No wonder the little punk thought he could get away with it.

I Guess We Were Being a Little Too Gentle

Doh! I feel like such a doofus. The night we got the New Beetle, a little red icon lit up on the dash that indicated that the trunk was open. Problem was, the trunk wasn't open. Mike and I both checked and it seemed to be latched. About the same time, the alarm quit emitting a "beep" when we armed it. I called the dealer thinking I had two problems with the car. He talked to one of the mechanics, and they said it's not uncommon for a switch or fuse to go out, make the icon light up, and, the alarm "beep" will not work, because the car thinks the trunk is still open. So, he wanted me to set up and appointment at their service area to bring the car in. Trouble was, I really couldn't find the time. I figured I would wait until the girls were on winter vacation, which is next week. That would make it a little easier for me. So, for three weeks or so, I have been driving around with this annoying red icon all lit up on my dash. The alarm does work. I found that out the hard way. (That's another blog entry. And no, no one tried stealing the car.) Anyway, I came home from grocery shopping yesterday. Unloaded the car and, with me hands full, pushed the trunk lid down firmly, let go, and let gravity take over. It shut with a nice firm thunk. I looked at it and noticed that it seemed to be a little bit more snug with the lines of the car. No way..... Sure enough, I clicked the button for the alarm and the horn emitted a nice small "beep". And yes, when I went to drive it later, the red icon was gone. It turns out that Mike and I both had been gently closing the lid. While it was latching, it wasn't completely sealed. It really needs a nice firm push. I felt like a big doofus this morning when I sent an e-mail to the dealer letting them know that the problem was fixed and I wouldn't need to bring the car in. But, I am glad that that was the problem and it wasn't something that broke down so soon on the new car already.

It's Been Quiet Around Here

Ever since the "Do Not Call List" took effect, it's been real quiet here at night. We never did really pick up the phone. We have caller ID and screen any unidentified calls through the answering machine. Telemarketers, usually showed up as "Out of Area". And, most of the time, they would not leave messages on the machine. Usually, they would hang up as soon as the answering machine came on. But still, it was annoying to have the phone ringing every 15 minutes every weeknight. I didn't really realize just how much the call volume had gone down until last night. The phone rang!!!! It scared me for a second. If you haven't signed up for the list, I recommend that you do it right now. It really works. Here's the link.

Been So Busy

Sorry I haven't been posting lately. It just seems that I have been real busy lately. I've been trying to decorate the house for Christmas, along with working, doing Christmas shopping (via catalog and the internet. I try not to go to the stores unless I absolutely have to.) And, I guess there hasn't been much happening lately. Hopefully, things will slow down a bit, so I can catch up.
